Site planning is the foundational layer of landscape architecture — establishing how a site's outdoor spaces, circulation, built form, and natural features relate to one another before detailed design of any individual space begins. This means analysing a site's topography, existing vegetation, solar orientation, and access points, and using that analysis to shape where buildings sit, how people and vehicles move through the site, and how outdoor space is organised to work with the site's inherent characteristics rather than against them.
Good site planning is fundamentally about reading a site honestly — understanding its slopes, drainage patterns, existing trees worth preserving, and its relationship to surrounding context — before imposing a design on top of it. We approach site planning as the discipline that sets up every subsequent landscape decision to succeed, because a site plan that ignores genuine site conditions creates problems — drainage failures, awkward circulation, unusable outdoor space — that no amount of subsequent detailed design can fully resolve.
