Heritage Landscape Conservation

Restoring and managing Kashmir's historic gardens and culturally significant outdoor spaces with care for what makes them irreplaceable.

What’s included

  • Historic landscape survey and condition assessment.
  • Historical research into original design intent and spatial character.
  • Conservation and restoration strategy development.
  • Sensitive plant species survey and retention planning.
  • Minimum-intervention restoration design.
  • Post-intervention documentation and ongoing management plan.

Complementing the Heritage & Restoration Design service under the Design vertical, heritage landscape conservation addresses the sensitive restoration and management of historic gardens, courtyards, and culturally significant outdoor spaces — a discipline where the design brief is defined not by what a client wants to create but by what already exists and what it is worth protecting. This is particularly resonant given the depth of traditional Kashmiri garden design that already informs our Courtyards and Gardens work.

We approach heritage landscape work with thorough historical and condition research before any intervention is designed — understanding what a historic landscape's original spatial intent was, what has been lost or degraded over time, and what restoration or management approach is proportionate and reversible. Conservation interventions are designed to be the minimum necessary to arrest deterioration and restore function, with full documentation of both the pre-intervention condition and the work carried out.
